Meeting Future Scientists – Yongjeong Middle School’s ‘SVD’ Science Club Visits 3billion
- News | 25. 08. 13
Along with the blazing August sun, some very special guests visited the 3billion office.
They were students from Yongjeong Middle School’s science club, SVD (Science Volunteers Dongari(Dongari; Club in Korean)), in Boseong, Jeollanam-do. As part of their summer break activities—where they explore various science-related sites to learn and consider future careers—they came to see firsthand how 3billion uses data and AI technology to diagnose rare genetic diseases.

Five students visited our office on Teheran-ro, where they first learned about 3billion through an introduction session, followed by an office tour. Moving through our offices and labs, they explored the sequencing equipment and research environments used for actual genome analysis. Their curious eyes and fascinated expressions were truly memorable.
During the Q&A session with Executive Director Sookjin Lee, the students learned how 3billion’s genetic variant interpretation technology shortens the diagnostic journey for rare disease patients and transforms the lives of patients and their families. They nodded along and asked thoughtful questions, showing genuine empathy and connection with 3billion’s mission.

“All of us are deeply interested in life sciences that help us understand the human body. That’s why we really wanted to visit 3billion. Hearing about the diagnostic process and seeing the research site in person made what we’ve read in books feel so much more vivid.”
In the students’ final reflections, their determined and passionate expressions revealed a strong desire to explore their interests deeply and move toward their dreams.
Through this visit from the Yongjeong Middle School SVD club, we at 3billion actually gained even more energy from their pure passion for science. Though brief, it was an enriching encounter—one that further fueled the students’ curiosity for science, and gave us at 3billion a meaningful opportunity to witness the drive of future scientists up close. 😊
